Intergeneral (Grandparents’) Day

Grandparents, older relations and neighbours joined 3 classes in St. Oliver Plunkett’s N. S. on Wednesday 5th. May for a chat about schooldays long ago and schooldays now. Old and Young enjoyed living the history of their local community as they listened to John Mc Guinness sing about Blackrock and Leo O’Callaghan who attended the school, talk about his schooldays when corporal punishment was commonplace. The children played their tin whistles and sang songs . There were individual performances from Leah on the violin, Melissa on the cello, songs from Stephania and Molly and a poem about grandparents from Aoife . Grandparents Leo Gartland and Rose Farrelly sang also. Although many guests were local, some had travelled from Belfast, Wicklow, Dublin, Mayo and Down.
The children gave their guests a guided tour of the school, followed by a visit to the garden where azaleas were planted to celebrate the occasion. This very enjoyable and informative morning concluded with a cup of tea in the school hall. Best of all there was no homework for anyone that night! Both 3. Third class teachers Mrs. McAdam and Mrs. Thornton described the day as “an enriching and a rewarding” experience.
